Christmas trees, colourful baubles, and the irresistible scent of freshly baked cookies filling the air. It’s the time of year we’ve all been waiting for… The Festive Season is here!

Oh, how most people enjoy this more spontaneous season, filled with delectable desserts, gift-giving and-receiving, as well as cherished moments with family and friends. However, amid the festive cheer, it's important to pause and consider the importance of safety for ourselves and those around us.

Despite the delightful atmosphere, the holiday season unfortunately also witnesses a rise in unwanted activity, such as theft, burglary, armed robberies, and road accidents. To ensure an uninterrupted, carefree, and joyous celebration, it's essential to be vigilant and take proactive measures.

We’ve prepared a few practical tips that you can implement to enhance your safety:

1. BE VIGILANT

Always be aware of your surroundings. Whether you are at home, the mall, or on the road, staying focussed and alert will enable you to react quickly if needed.

2. SECURE YOUR VEHICLE

Always check that your vehicle is securely locked. Consider parking at a protected location, for example in a garage, or behind security gates for added security.

3. HOME SECURITY

Regularly check and maintain your house alarm and CCTV equipment. Ensure that all locks and security gates are in proper working condition. Additionally, make sure that your electrical fence is functioning correctly.

4. ELECTRICAL SAFETY

Protect your electronic devices and appliances by installing power surge and lightning surge protectors.

5. ARMED RESPONSE

Confirm that your armed response is operational and know how to contact them in case of an emergency. Before leaving on holiday, run a test and check that the alarm to their response room is working properly.

6. STAY INFORMED

Be alert, and stay on top of events and activities in your area. See if you have a Neighbourhood Watch WhatsApp Group that you can join. Knowledge about your surroundings is a key component of ensuring your safety and the protection of your loved ones.

7. INSURANCE COVER

Review your insurance cover to ensure you are properly insured. This includes cover for your home, vehicle, and valuable possessions. If you are planning on traveling with expensive items such as laptops, sports equipment, or designer sunglasses and luggage during the holidays, check that they are insured for their replacement value.

8. EXPENSIVE GIFTS

If you purchase expensive items during the festive season, insure them as soon as possible. Don’t leave packaging of costly gifts, such as TVs, sound systems, etc, outside your home for everyone to see. This might make you a target of unwanted attention.

9. GOING ON HOLIDAY

If you're planning to go on holiday during the festive season, take additional precautions to secure your home. Before leaving, make sure to:

Activate your alarm and fence, and check that they have a reliable backup power source.

Illuminate your property, especially during nighttime. For example, timers for indoor lights or outdoor motion-activated lights. A well-lit property can act as a deterrent to potential intruders.

Notify your neighbourhood watch and armed response company about your absence. Inform trusted neighbours or friends so they can keep an eye on your property.

Switch off appliances and electrical lights to conserve energy and reduce the risk of electrical issues. This not only contributes to energy efficiency but also eliminates potential fire hazards.

As we immerse ourselves in the joy of the festive season, let's also prioritise safety amidst the joyous moments. Embracing a few practical tips will contribute to a celebration that is both secure and delightful.

May this holiday season brim with happiness, warmth, and an unwavering peace of mind.
